Adolescence and young adulthood is a time of great change, and with that comes an opportunity for learning how to navigate new challenges. I believe in an integrated approach to therapy that involves both relationship-building and cognitive-behavioral techniques (e.g. learning new ways to think and act). Working with adolescents requires flexibility and creativity to sustain engagement in the therapeutic process. I integrate traditional "talk-therapy" with art, music, technology, and real-world activities. Feedback from parents is seen as an important part of the process. Due to issues of confidentiality, communication with parents about treatment is negotiated before treatment begins with the adolescent and parents.
Creating a positive body image starts with how we relate to ourselves. It requires self-esteem, a positive attitude and emotional stability. Unfortunately, negative messages from others in our lives and from the media can make this a challenging proposition. For some, self-harm and eating disorders are a form of punishment and an expression of self hatred toward their own body. These can be very complex issues. Recovery is possible by informing teens about the inner working of their brain as it relates to intrusive thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.
Whether you are feeling stuck in a repetitive pattern that is hindering you from reaching your full potential or are experiencing debilitating symptoms that are impacting your day to day functioning, I provide a safe, nonjudgmental environment that fosters change and growth. Together, we will work toward defining and achieving your treatment goals.
